2026 Annual Progress Advice

Last updated: 2 Jul 2026

Overview

Each year the Climate Change Authority publishes Annual Progress Advice that provides:

  • an assessment of Australia’s progress towards emissions reduction targets
  • analysis of the climate policy landscape
  • recommendations to help Australia meet its targets and achieve a prosperous and resilient net zero future.

In 2026, our Annual Progress Advice will include input to the government’s 2026–27 review of the Safeguard Mechanism and analysis of opportunities to reduce fossil methane emissions.

The Climate Change Act 2022 requires us to provide independent, evidence-based recommendations, which the Minister for Climate Change and Energy must address in the Annual Climate Change Statement to Parliament.

Milestones

  • June–August 2026: public consultation
  • November 2026: advice delivered to the Minister for Climate Change and Energy and published.
